Day 3 Friday 29.09.23
Plenary 13: “Europe in energy transition: a common challenge”
On the EUROPE IN ENERGY TRANSITION: A COMMON CHALLENGE, Matthew Lodge, British Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic and Susanna Terstal, Dutch Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic explored different cases and paradigms – from the UK and the Netherlands – of moving towards climate neutrality, in view of major Energy goals and challenges. Matthew Lodge pointed out that a water-tight regulatory framework, effective binational communications and citizens’ engagement will contribute to achieving the energy transition. Susanna Terstal mentioned that action in the energy sector needs action outside the sector, continuous cooperation between the nations, and sharing of expertise.

Plenary 14: “Climate resilience and sustainable investments”
On the CLIMATE RESILIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENTS, it is underlined that the future development of alternative fuels is the tool for the decarbonization process, followed by the decarbonization of products, with the use of CCUs and energy efficiency technologies. a pilot green hydrogen production is being prepared, using surplus electricity from PV. Redesigning and redefining the business industry is of utmost importance. Energy transition vs adaptation is a fake dilemma, since adaptation should be in parallel to the energy transition and not in favor. There is a need to be proactive and not reactive to natural disasters.

Keynote Address 6: Sustainable and Resilient Cities
In his keynote address on Sustainable And Resilient Cities, Prof. Haris Doukas, Professor and Deputy Dean, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), highlighted the importance of transforming our cities to be more sustainable and resilient to the challenges posed by the climate crisis. He analyzed the recent impacts of the climate crisis on Greece, such as the recent wildfires and floods, and how the cities can play an important role in the energy transition. He pointed out new innovative concepts, such as the “15-minute” city, stressing the locality as a central concept for our future cities. Finally, he illustrated the importance of a just transition, and specifically the housing and energy costs that are increasing over the last few years, burdening the citizens.

Plenary 15: “Reimagining Energy Landscapes: Unlocking The Potential Of Greek And EU Islands In The Energy Transition, Powered By NESOI European Islands Facility”
On the REIMAGINING ENERGY LANDSCAPES: UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF GREEK AND EU ISLANDS IN THE ENERGY TRANSITION, POWERED BY NESOI EUROPEAN ISLANDS FACILITY, NESOI project and its major results have been presented, while it is underlined the necessity to keep up the platform of island initiatives alive. There are several issues related to the islands transition to be examinded, namely the decarbonization of interconnected islands, the islands as energy exporter or importer and the electricity autonomy. Thus, there is a need of combination of various technologies to increase security of supply.
